Frequently Asked Questions
-
Is your farm open for visitors?Yes! We welcome visitors. You do not need to be a prospective buyer; just being interested in the Fjord breed is enough. We ask that you contact us in advance and make an appointment. We do show our horses, attend Fjord events, and have work related to the operation of our 135 acre farm. Please call or text us first if you want to come by. We also participate in the Culpeper Harvest Days (Farm Tour) each year. See our calendar for dates. This free event is open to the public from 10 - 4 over the third weekend in September. We offer demonstrations on Fjord versatility. It's a great way to see Fjords as well as other farms in the area.

Where are you located? We are in Rixeyville, Virginia which is about 75 miles southwest of Washington, DC in Culpeper County.
-
How many foals do you have each year?We typically have 4 - 6 foals each breeding season. Most foals are for sale unless being retained for our own breeding program. We do not sell foals in utero; the foal must be born and its health verified by a vet before we will sell it. As breeders we know that while most foal births are straightforward, there is always one that is not. We may have to make expensive and difficult decisions regarding a foal. We prefer to take the risk versus allow an in utero buyer to assume it.
-
Why do you require mortality insurance for your foal sales?Unless a buyer is paying for the foal in full at the time of contracting, we require mortality insurance. Mortality insurance protects the buyer and seller in the event there is a loss of the foal. It does happen; not very often fortunately, but if a deposit is made for a future payment at weaning, we will not sell the foal without a mortality policy. The cost is reasonable -- around $300 for a year and coverage can be cancelled for a short rate refund after the foal leaves our farm. We are happy to refer you to an equine insurance specialist who can provide mortality coverage if you need help finding the coverage. When we imported three weanlings in 2023, we insured each of them for mortality. We continue insuring them now because young horses can be accident prone and their replacement cost is steep.

How do I find an adult Fjord to purchase? That can be a challenge because Fjords are an uncommon breed that has more demand than supply in the horse market. Your search becomes more challenging when there are parameters of age, color, size, gender and training. We encourage flexibility where possible, otherwise you can find that these is only one or two Fjords available nationally that meet your criteria. The best way to find a Fjord is to get to know breeders and owners. Fortunately most "Fjord people" are friendly and will talk about horses at length. They are a great resource for learning about the breed, as well as who might be selling a Fjord. We have done many referrals to other sellers in our time with Fjords. However, there is no secret source and a buyer should be prepared for a lengthy search that will be regional if not national. We think Fjords are worth it! See our resource page for more information.
