Foals and Weanlings

Ironwood Farm is proud to be an award winners in the the Virginia Bred Program supported by he Virginia Horse Industry Board.   The program recognized quality breeding among horses born in Virginia.  Our awards have been earned through the Commonwealth Dressage and Combined Training Association in dressage and eventing.  Our goal is to breed horses suited for these disciplines and receiving the recognition based on performance results tells us we are going in the right direction!

We also pride ourselves in participating in the Norwegian Fjord Horse Registry evaluation program.  This voluntary program allows Fjord owners to have their horses’ conformation evaluated against the ideal breed standard, as well as earn recognition in performance in riding, driving and draft disciplines.  Most of our breeding stock has been evaluated.

Feel free to contact us if you are interested in a 2022 foal.  We offer naming rights within the Ironwood rubric for names if purchased pre-weaning.

If you have a question related to any of our horses don't hesitate to call us at 540-729-4430 or send us an e-mail at ironwoodfarmva@aol.com.  We are happy to send current videos.

2022 Foals - $5500 each until weaned; $6000 thereafter

Foals are priced at $5000 each and this includes registration (including a DNA test) in the buyer’s name.  The buyer may choose the foal’s registered name as long as it follows the farm naming convention.  The buyer is required to insure the foal for mortality while it stays at Ironwood Farm until weaned. The annual mortality insurance premium is about $250 for a foal over 31 days old.  We strongly recommend that colt buyers also purchase surgical/major medical if they are considering gelding.  While most gelding goes well, it can also have undesired outcomes that require additional  vet services.

Weaning occurs at 5 months of age; foal registration must occur prior to 6 months of age and once registered, the breed registry does not allow subsequent name changes.  The price goes up after weaning to reflect the cost of shots, worming, farrier services and training.

We are expecting 4 foals in 2023 from the following mares-

      • OFI Klara (Tico) - May 2023
      • Plain Dealing’s Greta (Prydarson) - May, 2023
      • Plain Dealing’s Eastra (Prydarson) - Juy, 2023
      • DC Josefine (Bayshore Simen) - July, 2023

All mares are bred to our own Ironwood Blitzen, S1, G1, E, V.  Blitzen passes on his steady temperament and work ethic.  He has won numerous performance awards in eventing. dressage, driving and draught work.  All the mares are all from quality performance lines. We breed for performance in dressage and eventing for the amateur owner rider.

We have the following weanling available from our 2022 crop:

    • Blue Raven Farm La Belle (Orka) - Brown  Dun Colt.  DOB:  July 12, 2022.  Weaned, has had his shots, stands for the farrier, leads and is very quiet.
